Hi
Does anyone know how to model wires in SW2004.
The cables has to look bent as it will be looking
physically.

There is probably a better way to do this, but here is how I have been doing it. I use a 3D sketch and then I create a sweep along the sketch. Then I insert it into the assemlby and manipulate it there to fit by adding relations.

That's probably about the best way to do it cpukiller since Embassy works was bought up by AutoDesk. The only thing I would change cpukiller is instead of starting a new part and building it there then inserting into anassembly. I would click in the assembly on insert\new component and make a profile then add my 3d sketch from there. Once you have that you can make the sweep.

I thought the Routing add-in was going to take this up eventually, but I'm not sure about that. It's only hear say, so don't quote me on that.

If it's primarily for looks, use a spline for your path. That way you can push or pull points around to get what you want and can anchor the endpoints to your start/end points. Makes some nice looking wires.

Forgot to add.

When using 3Dsketch - push the tab key to control the direction - X,Y - X,Z - Y,Z - Etc... You can also just drop those lines Horzontal, Vertical or in space. You can also use Splines in 3Dsketch as well.

Hello,

The spline is an excellent idea, please note that starting in SolidWorks 2004 you can "fit a spline" between 2 or more lines. This is very helpful in modelling cable connections.

Cheers,

Joseph

Embassy was very expensive and quite limited in many respects. (Though it had some cool features if you wanted a lot of nail boards, etc.)

SW tells me that the new tube routing functions will be supporting cables very soon if not already (including connectivity).

I always use: In assy, insert new part, create sketched circle, then add 3dsketch (spline). I always create my wires in assys and sometimes as a different config.

What SBaugh mentioned earlier is something I had heard. SW Routing was to incorporate cabling. I never heard officially, but it would be nice. Perhaps I can find out during the SW World from some unsuspecting soul...

Mr.Pickles,

When are you going to arrive at the Conference?

I'll be there on Saturday afternoon through Tuesday morning (flight in the morning).

I'm there for the VAR Conference... to bad they don't have both going on at the same time... [sadeyes]

Oh well maybe I'll see you there... maybe

Can't miss me. I'll be the one dressed up like a Pickle...

I get there Sat afternoon as well. Leaving Wed AM. I will be working in the Partner Pavillian sometimes, and attending a few round tables and such. I may even be sneaking into a particular VAR session...

I heard the routing rumor from a SW person who should know. Mind you, as with many things, it may have to take it's place in line depending on priorities. SO EVERYONE request the enhancement!!!!

I was - and he did. So at least I didn't get coal.....
OK, OK, It's a reference to my holiday sig. "Be naughty - Save Santa a trip..."
