Matching billet material properties in casting

Hello all,

I am working on a project and having a bugger of a time finding a foundry that can help me match the material properties I am currently getting in a billet part. We are using 4340 and a custom heat treat recipe to get the following properties. Is there any way that these can be matched in a casting? Thanks in advance.

You will never be able to match the properties of wrought material with a casting. The inherent issues of grain size and in-homogeneity will prevent that.
There are a few guys here that are much better with cast steels than I am.

You should be able to get something close to the 134ksi/157-178ksi/11% numbers from heat treated IC4340, but it would require using a controlled investment casting process. However, as noted above, cast material will be inferior to wrought material when it comes to fatigue/fracture performance due to issues like grain size/refinement. It is difficult to control solidification precisely with most casting processes, and the material in direct contact with the mold surface will typically have different grain characteristics than the material away from the mold surface.

I agree with the previous posts. It is not possible to get similar mechanical properties in a sand casting( I assume).
Castings are prone to contain several heterogeneous defects like inclusions, dissolved gases, segregation, coarse grains etc.

The foundry can deliver your mechanical properties in the castings, by selecting a suitable casting alloy.

This problem is faced while reengineering from a forged part to a cast one, without understanding the limitations of cast process.
