Hi everyone, I am trying to design masonry shear wall. My reference is "Reinforced Masonry Engineering Handbook-6th Ed." by Amrhein. Can anyone please tell me what is the difference between the example 6-I and 6-J? Why are they analyzed differently? The PDFs of the examples are attached.

Thanks.

It's because of the relative magnitudes of the compressive axial loads.

In the first example, axial stress is low, so the shear wall can be considered neglecting interaction. In the second example, interaction and strain compatibility become more important.
