Make one part dependent of another (link)

I cannot seem to link one part to another.
I'm making frames, and i want the inner frame to be linked to the outer frame.
When i change the dimension of the outer frame, the inner should follow with some more modifications to fit.
Now, i've tried everything. I've used copy link from the parent part and pasted it into the inner part and when i update the outer part, the inner won't follow.
What i do is i close both parts, open up the parent part, outer, edit it to correct dimensions, save and then open the child part. The child won't listen to the parent.
I've tried inserting a part copy (parent) into the child part. Still won't work.
How should i do?

Please help out, i'd apprecate it.

Hi Raptor,
Are you using the Frames command in Assembly?
If so you should be able to dimension the inner frame profiles to the outer profiles.
You can create one or more sketches in the Frames environment and use those as the paths for the sections.

No mate, i'm not using the frame command.
I will try it out!
But! Why should i start an assembly when i want to make a part first and then assemble the two parts?
You mean make one part, then make an assembly and then generate the second part?

Raptor,
No, you just create an empty assembly that will be your finished frame, then start the frames command from Applications>Frame Design.
It's a lot like XPressRoute, but you may need to generate some of the sections you require first. Have a look in Help.
Alternaively, if you are not happy with this method, create sketches in your assembly and link your individual parts to those sketches.

Sound like your on the right track. What happens if you open the child bar and click on Update links in the upper tool bar? It could be that you have the parts to only update manually.

Another thing to check. If you link via variables you should be able to open the child part and display Interpart Manager. In the list you should see the variable link. If you link with a part copy make sure there is a link symbol by the part copy in your feature tree. If not then you uncheck the Link box when inserting the part copy.

I got it working, but i didn't like the way i made it work
Is there a way to link two parts relative each other. Not absolut with correct directory.

C:\Parts\part.par
C:\Parts\part2.par

instead.
\Part.par
\Part2.par

BTW.
The way i did is took the parent and inserted it as a "Part Copy" to maintain the links.
Was that necessary?

Sorry. Forgot to tell another thing. I never used the assembly, only the part. I inserted a party copy in the child part first and then edited links in the child part.

You've confused me a little. Are you linking variables in the variable table or are you linking geometry to the Part Copy?

If you can post a pic of the child part with the Part Copy in it. I fear you may be making this more difficult than necessary.

If you are making frames it really is worth while getting to know the dedicated frame tool using the help. It is not an overly intuitive tool so take the time to go through the help in detail. Also remember that the sequence you apply the sections to the sketch will affect how they are jointed to eachother - build it up gradually.
I usually draw my own structural sections - but remember it only works if you create the section in one shot i.e. if you are drawing hollow box section, you cannot extrude a box and then cut out the centre.

I am linking variables. But in order to make it work, i had to import a part copy.

Then something is wrong or you and I are using different terminology. Inserting a Part Copy would have nothing to do with linking variables.

When I say "linking variables" I'm referring to the following steps:

1. Open both files
2. Open the variable table in Part 1, select the row with your variable, RMB and select Copy Link
3. Switch to part2, select the row with variable you want linked, RMB and select Paste Link.

Is this what you did to link the variables? If you could post both files it would be much easier to determine the problem.

That is what i did. But i couldn't get it working.
I think i know why now. Its because i saved all files under a different name during the editing.

PartVersion1.1.par
etc...
