What is the significance of Random Access Channel (RACH) in LTE. I know it is used for initial contact and short data transmission but cant Physical Shared Channel be used for the same? Also RACH, due to the preamble requires a lot of processing, so whats the overall advantage we get by it?

PRACH is the only non-synchronised transmission that the user equipment can make within LTE.
