I am looking for a reciprocating mechanism, that is low cost, to convert rotary to linear motion. It is critical that when the mechanism reverses, the dwell is kept to the absolute minimum. (time) Maximum travel 450mm. Maximum speed 3 metres per minute. I have tried rolling ring drives but they do not appear to be all that reliable. A servo drive is to expensive for this application. Please any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could you pse specify required accuracy, max. force and its variations and any other requirements? <nbucska@pcperipherals.com>

If you can handle the angular movement at the end, use an eccentric wheel. If angular movement is problem, use an inline link in conjunction with the eccentric wheel. Speed controlled by rotational speed and "throw" controlled by diameter of the wheel.

How about a ball-reverser mechanism? Travel speed will be directly proportional to shaft speed and virtually no dwell at reversal.
