Can anyone provide standard keyway specifications for documation purposes? Inch sizes are most importain at this time. I am looking for a basic formular, unlike the information in the machinist handbook.

Thank You

Any good text book on machine design should contain all the theoretical information on keyway. Try a college/university bookstore or library for these books.

My first bit of advice would be to look up the standard on keys and keyways. Since you are focusted mostly on inch sizes, try ANSI B17.1-1967 & B17.2-1967 which is now available through ASME @ 345 E. 47th St. New York, New York, 10017 or at
The standards, I believe, have been updated though. You could try these from the ANSI webstore ( (
NASM35756-1998 KEY, WOODRUFF, STEEL, ALLOY, WITH KEYWAY AND KEY SLOT DIMENSIONS (SUPERSEDING MS35756E) $14.50
NA0139-1993 KEYWAY AND KEY SLOT DIMENSIONS METRIC $14.50
ISO 3912:1977 Woodruff keys and keyways $26.00
ISO 3117:1977 Tangential keys and keyways $26.00
ISO 2492:1974 Thin taper keys with or without gib head and their corresponding keyways (Dimensions in millimetres) $26.00
ISO 2491:1974 Thin parallel keys and their corresponding keyways (Dimensions in millimetres) $26.00
ISO 2490:1996 Single-start solid (monobloc) gear hobs with tenon drive or axial keyway, 1 to 40 module - Nominal dimensions $26.00
ANSI/AGMA 9002-A86 (R1995) Bores and Keyways for Flexible Couplings (Inch Series) $43.00

Other than that, since I don't own the standard, can only give you what the Machinery's Handbook has to offer, but in a more condensed format.

P.S.

You may also want to post your question on the ANSI and ASME forums.
