hi people..
i have two 110kv line bays at a loop station and this is in turn connected to a transformer that also feeds into our grid. the protection for the line bays is required to trip the transformer. i asked why the transformer needs to be tripped for a lin fault and the answer i got was islanding. duh...i am new to this, so can yourll help me out here. the transformer is fed from wind turbines. i suspect it will have something to do with the turbines.

thanks in advance

Powercam,

It's a little confusing without a diagram of your system, but I suspect that the utility doesn't want an energized transformer in an otherwise blacked-out area in the event of a general loop trip. This assumes your wind turbines are self-exciting. You'd potentially create an "island" of energized grid that the linemen might not be expecting...

Again, I'd have to look at a diagram to be sure -- but you could also call this fellow back and get him to explain his term....

Good luck1

Islanding occurs when the grid is split up into two or more isolated sections, each containing generation and load.
