Is V12 better than S6 configuration?

For recreation, I'm trying to work out why "advanced" IC engines are V12's. I've read a 1950's theory of machines book that does Fourier analysis of straight 4s, 6s, radial engines and W12's, but not V12s. As far as I can tell, the lowest frequency of vibrations ought to be (for 90 degree V8 and 60 V12):
S4 - 2nd harmonic
V8 - 4th harmonic
S6 - 6th harmonic
V12] - 6th harmonic
But my pappy told me V12's were much better than all the rest. Now if S6's vibrate at 3rc harmonic, I'd be convinced, but the book says reciprocating engines only vibrate at even harmonics. But perhaps the book is being over-simplistic.

Simple pointers or explanations gratefully received.

Paul Gover
Jaguar driver (4.2 S6, 5.3 V12)
