Is Insurance required when PE Sealing for Large Corporation? 2

Is insurance personal insurance required if you stamp engineering drawings for a large corporation? I transferred to a different division of a large company were stamping the drawings is expected of me by the engineering manager (who is not a PE). The manager says personal insurance is not required. The old division I worked for did not allow engineers to stamp drawings, so drawing had to be sent out to a consultant for review, approval and stamping.

I wanted to get some other opinions on this issue and if required what would be recommended protections.

I think you will find that as a design professional, you, personally, are liable and you probably need some protection. Employees are typically covered by general liability coverage of an employer but general liability and errors and ommissions are typically seen differently by insurers. You may or may not be covered. I probably should ask if the company has errors and omissions coverage and if you are specifically covered. You may even ask for a certificate of insurance listing you as additional insured. If you know who your risk manager is, that person can work with you on your concerns to ensure you feel comfortable sealing drawings.

In that situation typically the Corporation has a blanket Omissions & Errors policy covering your screwups. Or at least they should. You had better clarify their policy if it is not clear.

An important factor can be what business the corporation performs. State engineering laws sometimes have special language for employee's of public, telephone, and electric utilities that reduces or even eliminates the personal risk when the employees perform design work for their company.

Especially true of governmental employees who may have immunity as long as they are performing their assigned duties without malice.
