My colleagues and I are disputing the meaning of the last sentence of the first paragraph in ASME Y14.3-2012 Section 6:
"The terms "top," "front," "bottom," "right side," "left side," and "rear" shall themselves not be used for naming views.
I'm interpreting this to mean the principal orthographic views shall not have, say, "TOP" or "TOP VIEW" labels attached to them in the way that a section or detail view would. I'm not sure why this would need to be the case, but the use of the term "shall" makes me think this is a rule for a reason.
Furthermore, I didn't see any examples in Y14.3 that used the term "TOP" or "TOP VIEW" (for example), so I'm assuming doing this is against the rules.
However, I need more supporting evidence to make this a policy, so how do you interpret this sentence? Would principal view labels be okay?
