I am still a civil engineering student and have used this forum for learning for a couple of times. But today I found a thread talking about bearing resistance of soil for foundation and one information over there really bugged me. An user stated that the bearing capacity of a soil "is what it is" and there is nothing much that can be done to change that value.
So I had a doubt of in what aspects he said that, since, if I am not wrong, the bearing capacity can be increase by compaction or drainage (common and simple techniches, right?), can't it? Was he saying from a practical point of view, where its cheaper and easier to just modify your foundation design (for different type or depth) or compaction really does not increase bearing capacity?
