Does anyone know how to account for fluctuating loads (in magnitude. Direction does not change) in hydrodynamic bearing design, and can the Raimondi and Boyd charts be used to do analysis on this loading condition?. I have read that these bearings can carry significantly higher instantaneous peak loads as opposed to a constant steady load.

go to rickwsykes post in this forum. There is some good general stuff there. English muffin and fluidfilm touch on liquids resistance to very rapid shock. Hey drop an egg gently into water and it won't break because very low viscosity water has plenty of time to displace. However if the egg impacts the water fast enough, in that brief instant, the water won't have time to act as a liquid. It will behave momentarily like a solid and the egg will break. I think the same goes to answer your question
