I need to design a HSS beam to Wide flange column connection. Beam frames in to the web of the column. It is a shear connection.
Any suggestions for the type of connections that can be used.

Thanks.

I think the simplest is to have an end plate on the tube that bolts to the web.

If you will have difficulty erecting the tube (between the flanges) then I would weld a flat plate across the column flanges to mate with end plate on the tube.

Thanks everyone.

We did a detail similar to the 2nd option suggested by jike.

Just for the sake of discussion mystruct, I think detail by asixth is also cool, and if you remove his stiffeners(top and bottom plates) it becomes a simple shear tab. You can check if stiffeners are necessary or not by simple check(see blodgett)

Shear tabs eliminate drilling into the webs of columns and can be used when beams frame from both sides of the column web. And there will be a lot of maneuvering space during erection work

Just FYI. A standard shear tab to a column web is difficult to erect. Especially if framing column web to column web. An extended single plate is easier to erect. Design is required for the eccentricity.

The end plate connect is easier and cheaper to fabricate. But creates a fixed connection.
