How to polish scratched Sapphire crystal?

Would it be possible to polish Corundum crystal with grinding wheel dust mixed with water to form a slurry. I know diamond slurry used when lapping is excellent at polishing SS to a mirror finish. So does anyone reckon the former method would be possible? I suppose it depends on the grit size.
