Dear Specialists,

I need to know the damping ratio for a rear axle of a passenger vehicle.
I have done non-damped dynamic analysis, but the forces at the bearing positions are far too higher than the measurement.

If you let me know the methodology to measure the system damping in the rear axle or known damping ratio, it will be highly appreciated.

Thank you.

Experimental Modal Analysis is the technique. You need a two channel FFT analyser , an instrumented hammer, an accelerometer, some experience, and a lot of work, to get this.

Thank you very much, Greg Locock,

You gave me basic information on how to measure damping, which is very precious.

However I need to know the methodology to measure the damping in detail.
Please forgive my poor knowledge on dynamics.

Thank you again.

You need to learn about experimental modal dynamics. Books have been written about it, I can't begin to describe what you need in a note.

Ask around in your organisation, someone who measures vibration will be able to show you what is necessary. Cheers
