I am trying to develop a preliminary plan for a church facility (i.e. activity center). Specifically, I need to know the number of commodes required by code so that I can minimize the restrooms as much as possible (IBC2000 - I have the structural code - but not the plumbing code).

The total area of the facility will be 140'x60'= 8400 sf

I appreciate any guidance.

Pop into your local libary, they will have a refenece copy of the applicable plumbing code, activity centers are special cases and are detailed in the code to the size and expected activities. Or your local plumbing inspector may also provide assistance who should know the code inside and out.

Check out Chapter 4 of the International Plumbing Code. It deals with the exact number of water closets, drinking fountains, etc. that you will be required to have. Right now I'd say your in use group A-3, and will need 1 WC per 150 men, 1 WC per 75 women, 1 Lavatory per 200 people, 1 DF per 1,000 people, and 1 service sink. You will need to double check that depending on your locality and if the IPC applies in your area or if it is another plumbing code.
