High wear on worm & worm wheel

I am employing a worm & worm-wheel on application. It lifts and lowers a load, using an beam/arm.

The problem I am experiencing is a large amount of wear on the worm wheel and sometimes there is a vibrating whine when the load is beimng lowered. Could the load be overspeeding the motor?

One minute the gearset is quiet, then all of a sudden the noise appears.

Also I would like to know if anyone can recoomend a good worm and wheel grease

Thank-you for your time,
Regards.

It appears as though the lubricant is your problem. AGMA recommends an 8A Comp Lubricant for throated worms and an 8 Comp for cylindrical worms.

My first thought is that the load is back driving the motor. This may be the case if the helix angle and coefficient of friction combination means that the worm drive is not self locking.

To test this, can you turn somehow safely apply the load to the system without the motor connected to see if you can make the worm spin? If it does, then the load can overcome the drive.

The solution would then be to either create enough friction in the mesh to prevent backdrive (at the expense of wear and efficiency), or change out the gear and worm to a lower helix pair.

look at the CYCLO web site , I see a lot of these around the area where heavy shear loads are present They are designed to handle about 500 times the normal gear reducer load .
