HIDDEN LINES IN SECTION VIEWS

I have a HALF-SECTION (sometimes incorrectly referred to as a "quarter section&quot where half of the view shows the interior detail, and the other half shows the external. This is an extreemely useful convention, and is well described in ANSI & ASME stds, as well as the "DRM". (Extra credit Quiz Q: Do you know "DRM"? Anyway...).

The extracted view shows hidden lines in both halves. While this is not entirely unexpected (I'm getting used to these kinds of S-E issues), it IS incorrect. I'm told there's a way to "select" certain entities to "hide" them, so that I can un-show the hidden lines on the section-side of the view ONLY.

Any Suggestions?

The Only way I know, is to use the edge painter to change the linestyle of the lines that should be shown differently

Right click on the view you want to change and select draw in view.

Once there you should have access to a toolbar button called hide edges/show edges. Select hide edges and just click on the lines you want gone.

James- Thanks for your reply! I truly appreciate your attempt to help. The "Hide Edges" function was just where you said it would be, and allowed selection by entity, just as you predicted. What I didn't expect was that other lines- visible ones that should not have been affected - were eliminated as well.

The kludgey unpredictable operations and wholesale reliability upon work-around solutions for problems that have long been mastered in another "Less capable" (read "worse&quot program is souring what I had hoped would be a positive experience transfering an EXTENSIVE 3D background into a new S-E experience. That mastery of this program is a condition of my continued employment at this company, is the only driving force behind my continued efforts.

Any Suggestions?

You could try the show edges button to bring back the lines that were removed incorecctly. If this dosn't work you may be stuck, as far as I know.

Much like yourself, the transition from AutoCAD to SE has not been without it's problems. I think in the end the switch will pay off, but there are times when I wonder.

I am fortunate in that were I work almost all the drawings we make are made in house. A line or two out of place is not a bad thing and I have learned to live with this. It will take me 2 minutes to explain to a machinst that the drawing is missing something were it will take an hour to figure out that I can't make it work through SE.

While you are in Draw-in-View, draw lines overlapping the hidden lines you want to show in the view. Since you drew these lines with the line command and are not imported geometry, they will continue to show after you hide the imported geometry elements as explained above.

To get the final view to look exactly correct, you will have to play around with line styles, weights, etc. After a few tries with this, you realize what additional elements you need to incorporate into your templates to make the drawing view creation easier and more consistent.

I'm curious, as I tried this with v10 SP7&8, and I couldn't get SE to create a half/quarter section view. I would like to have my cutting plane lines at 90 degrees so one arrow points up and the other, left. The only way I can get the view to create is to add two more jogs into the cutting plane line that are outside of the geometry of the view, so I can have both arrows point up, and half the cut would be outside the part, therefore looking at the part rather than cutting through it.

Sure. Sounds like you tried the standard workarounds someone heads toward when the real solution (even existing!) doesn't present itself. We're getting so used to workarounds and kludges that we often abandon the search for the strictly correct solution before we've found it (re- a previous post-very isightful, jamesbarlow!)

The actual solution is fairly simple. Once in the view (after selecting the section-line command) start the line outside the part, head in to the stop-bend point (usually at the center...), HEAD BACK OUTSIDE THE PART-pick next point, then continue in a direction PARALLEL to the very first line segment. Hit [FINISH] then select the arrow direction that allows the look you want. If done correctly, the result should be a projected view that shows half inside, and half outside the part.
