I have very rough hand drawing of a chair that I would like to have CAD drawn in 3D before going forward with manufacturing a sample. Can someone give me a rough idea how long it should take a pro to do both 3D and actual lay out for manufacturing purpose? And how do I go about finding someone to do it?

Thanks!
Vic

It really depends on the complexity of the chair. Most drafting/design/engineering companies provide this type of service.

Do you have a particular manufacturer in mind? You may want to see what software they work with, for it should save you money if you can provide the model in the format they desire.

Also, make sure to have them sign a confidentiality / non-compete agreement prior to showing them the drawing.

What area are you in? DimensionalSolutions@Core.com

Depending on the complexity of the chair and work load of the design person/firm you select, it could take anywhere from a few weeks to several months.

As far as finding someone to do the design and manufacturing drawings, this forum is a great start, especially if you are open to the idea of working with someone you have never personally met. If you can handle that, then most of the work can be done via email, websites and other electronic means.

There are a lot of "lone gunman" here that would love to help you out. "The attempt and not the deed confounds us."

But if you do find a "lone gunman" here, and it no longer stays on topic, please make sure to move your discussion offline and not through eng-tips. Remeber the creedo -- "Selling and recruiting forbidden." That includes all advertising, solicitations, and the like.

Having a person discuss the problem with you in such a way that others can learn is one thing, having them do the work for you is another.

OK, off my soapbox now.

Thanks DSI and MADMANGO. No worries SWERTEL, just trying to get a better understanding of what I'm getting into. If I hook up with someone we'll go offline.

DSI: At this point I'm a one man operation trying to define and price all the pre and manufacturing processes I will need to get furniture samples on a show floor. My designs are fairly complex in that they involve multiple materials, thus multiples trades (metals, woods, leathers, etc..) and assembly. A 3D CAD design and manufacturing drawings would bring precision and cohesion to the whole process.

Aloha vicbee,

I would be interested in being your "Lone Gunman"!

If you need help in converting your sketches to 3D format, I can help you. I mainly work in Plastic Design but have an associate who can do this type of work.
