When realizing socket welding according to ASME VIII or B31.1/31.3, gap of 1.6 mm (0.06") had to be maintained. Ac tually we do it by inserting a plastic plug but it is not practical for equipment intended for special application. If someone know how to do it cheaply. What is avalaible in market to do this ?
Thank you in advance (M.A., Belgium)

Hi Abbver98,
I highly recommend using the Gap-Alets that Tecnico1948 suggests. I originally introduced them at my plant site in 1988 and now my former (I'm retired) chemical company (second largest in the world) has included them without substitution in all of their global pipe specs for many years. thumbsup2 Seldom

Thank you tecnico1948 and Seldom.
Yes, I found the pages that you indicate me and we plan to follow up.

Thank you again

I have never specified any mechanical means to ensure a gap on a socket weld. Every welder that I know simply cocks the fitting over to one side, puts a tack on the side with the resulting gap, brings the fitting into alignment, and then tacks/welds out the joint. No fuss, no muss.

Of course, appropriate QA/QC must be performed to ensure these gaps all end up in there...
