I have a project where we are trying to use an existing multi-wythe brick wall approximately 17'' wide as a 3hr rated fire wall. Is there a numerical procedure for determining the hourly rating for a wall of this construction? The wall is about 100 yrs old.

Check out the procedures outlined in "Technical Notes 16B - Calculated Fire Resistance" published by the Brick Industry of America ( It has a pretty good, and accepted, methodology for confirming that your wall is way more than 3 hrs.
