The proof load of a fastener is the maximum load under which no permanent deformation occurs, i.e. all strain is elastic and recoverable. Materials specifications define the proof load as 90% of the yield strength.
During testing, the fastener is initially measured, then loaded to the proof load. The load is then released, and the part re-measured. The part meets the requirement if the part has not experienced any length change.
