We are doing a project for a factory which is a Class 1, Div 2 area.

We need to find a vendor who sells Automatic Transfer Switches in Explosion Proof Enclosures (NEMA 7). Does anyone know of such a product and the vendor who may sell it?

I plan on trying ASCO, but their sales rep says they dont. Is there anyone else I should try?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

You've got your transfer switch in the wrong location. You need to find an unclassified area for your transfer switch.

What is the rating of the ATS you are planning to install in the classified area.

When planning an installation, every effort should be made to install all equipment in non-classified area. Then why you are asking only the ATS? How about the two power sources of the ATS, where they are located. Why not to install the ATS within the location of your sources.

Rule of thumb of the operation philosophy of the ATS, the nearer the power sources, the better, it is more ECONOMICAL and SAFER to invest on long and over size cables for the feeder of the load side of the ATS then to invest on the explosion proof enclosure of ATS.

The most reliable supplier of ATS in the oil and gas industry already declined your concept, then it is now time for you to explore other options. What do you think.

Thank you for the input, however do understand that I have not chosen this location because its easier to install the equipment there.

The location was chosen out of necessity. Real estate is rather limited inside and outside this building, and we have several of these ATS which are going to be installed, amongst other NEMA 7 rated panel boards, switches, and lights.

I would much rather place them somewhere else, but of the locations, this was actually one of the better, resulting in my inquiry of a vendor who might provide such a device.

If no such vendor exists, I am going to have to consult with the client and suggest they move everything to the roof.

Probably far less expensive on the roof, if there are even NEMA 7 versions.

I can see two options.

Option 1
Locate the Automatic Transfer Switches and Panelboards in the roof enclosed in outdoor weatherproof NEMA rated enclosure suitable to the environment to your location and ensure meeting the clearances/separations/spaces between existing electrical equipment and your new electrical equipment as recommended by your local standards and or NEC.

Option 2
If the clearances/separation/spaces between electrical equipment constraints your installation and cannot be met, then you can locate your explosion proof Panelboards in the classified areas.
