HI ,
We are having a pressure vessel( operating pr. 100 psi) whcih has an end cover which is abot 8 feet in dia. There are two grooves on this flange for gasket. Previously we were having rubber gaskets in this grooves. Depth of these grooves is 5 mm. Can one use ePTFE gasket tape for this vessel. I searched for this type of gasket tape but the thicknes of these tapes is not sufficient (usually 2,3 or 6 mm)Can one use rubber gasket made of strips in same way as eptfe gaskets are used?
Thanks

arun17, are your rubber gaskets O-rings by any chance? If so, you may have trouble with the tape sealant.

Regards,

Mike

Why can't you go for a gland rope? Inmarico has excellent range of ropes including metal wire impregnated ones (for high pressures). If you have high temperatures in the vessel, graphited teflon is better. Make a skive joint and keep the joint 180 deg. apart in the two grooves.

Burgmann deals with Chestorton ropes and they are also good.

Do not use ePTFE joint sealant (GORE-TEX) or tapes as a sealant IN THE GROOVE. These materials have zero recovery. Instead, use the joint sealant or gasket tape positioned inboard or (preferably) outboard of the groove. When your cover is installed, the joint sealant or tape will now carry the full bolt load, as is intended.

This will be a very economical alternative to a vulcanized elastomer strip gasket to fit in the groove. Any questions contact either W.L. Gore & Associates, Inc. (GORE-TEX) or Inertech, Inc. (Inertex). They are the two biggest, and most knowledgeable ePTFE sealant manufacturers.
