Hello everyone,

When I return to school this September I'm going to be living a third-floor attic. There is only one wee little window, so the space is sure to get a quite warm during these hot summer months.

Poking through the net recently, I stumbled upon this guide to building a DIY room-cooling system:


This device doesn't seem tenable to me. The water seems like it will run out quite quickly. Also, would the copper tubing really have enough surface area for that much heat exchanging to go on?

assume:

10 W/m^2-K heat transfer coefficient
0.25 in diameter
10 ft length
25F temperature delta

He's getting about 30 BTU/hr on a good day.


A typical room A/C does about 7000 BTU/hr

It will work, just badly and will definitely not cool a dorm room.

In case you wanted to know, it will do 0.0025 tons assuming 55F water.
