Hi all,

Have a question regarding dynamic stability control or electronic stability program what ever one like to describe a system which uses brake pulses to control understeer / oversteer.

Im curious as to why it requires 3 primary sensors; steering angle, yaw rate, and lateral acceleration (of course the complete system would also have things like wheel speed , pitch etc.), when in my mind the yaw rate together with steering angle or lateral acceleration with steering angle would suffice in identifing if the vehicle is u/s or o/s.

Do these systems run togather and compare yaw rate and lateral acc. as a comffirmation or is it used differently.

Im not sure if I have posted this in the correct topic area, but it does dive into the vehicle dynaics area.

In a normal turn the yaw rate, latacc and steer angle are obviously closely related. However, when the car is spinning it has very high yaw rate yet no lateral acceleration, and an arbitrary steering angle. Therefore they are not providing the same information to the processor.

As to what the processor does with those 3 channels, I don't know, the code is a black box in our installation. FWIW I am told the device attempts to linearise the transfer function yawvelocity/steeringwheelangle, for a given set of conditions.

I'll know a lot more about this in March, as that's when I'll be able to sit down and play with the computer model.

Cheers
