I dont know whether I'm in the right forum here, but if not perhaps someone can redirect me to a more appropropriate place....but in the meantime...

I would like some advice on how to measure without contact, to an accuracy of about 0.050mm, the distance of a machined spot near the periphery a rough oscillating disc (approx 2m dia.) from a location about 1m away from the plane of the disc. I am trying to detect and measure wear in the support brgs of the disc and hope to be able to pick up any small changes without interfering with the motion. Is a laser based system the right kind of device for a task such as this ? Any guidance would be appreciated.

There are several options. You could possibly use proximity sensors across the bearing structure and some reference:
