When you speak of a communication protocol, are you talking about serial communications, such as RS232, RS422, RS485.
Perhaps you are speaking of networking protocols such as ethernet, device net, modbus plus, etc. At any rate A field bus is a networking architecture which includes all physical devices used to join PLCs,drives, HMIs and I/O. A communication protocol is the rules that allow the field bus or networking architecture to function.
