I am trying to examine the effects of longitudinally oriented, ultrasonic vibrations on a thin wire. More specifically, I am looking for a device which will reveal the location of both the longitudinal and transverse nodes and anti-nodes along the length of the wire.

Is there a strobe device fast enough to show this to me? What are my other options?

This is a tough problem!
How thick is the wire?

How about using the wire to interupt ( even partial blocking
would be ok) a laser beam. This will enable you to detect high frequncy modulation using a CRO and photo diode/transistor.
Set the whole thing up with x-y vernier adjustment so you can measure antinode amplitude and the distance between nodes.
