Corner detail with one holdown

Hi,
Does anyone have a detail (or know where I can find one), for a 2x6 corner (wood frame building)? I have one holdown (e.g. a Simpson HTT16) at the front of the building, and I want to tie the corner together so I can use one holdown for each direction. I've attached a sketch.

Thanks.

For the loads you are talking about (3 t0 3.5 Kips uplift), I would use an STHD10 embedded strap tie mounted to a 6X6 or 4X6 rather than what you have spec'd - less eccentricity for the other shearwall you are trying to integrate into the connection. Makes no difference on the post size here - just place the post at the corner of the foundation and screw off the STHD to the post. With the shearwall nailing of both walls attached to the post, the holddown will work for both directions.

This can also be done with a multiple 2X6 stud arrangement, but you have to sequentially nail the studs together - more labor - use the solid stick. If you choose the 4X6, place the 6" side flush to the STHD for a greater placement error allowance for the contractor.

I do not have a detail at my immediate disposal, but I think the description should be adequate for you to create one. Good luck.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your response. I see what your saying... I've attached a jpeg of the STHD from the Simpson catalog... so you're recommending that rather than using 3 2x's (as shown in the jpeg) it would be better to use a 4x6.

Here's a little background on the building I'm analyzing - it's garage type structure - the largest uplift loads I have are along the transverse direction (one of the transverse walls has the garage doors). The building wall height is 14'. The uplift load in the longitudinal direction is about 25% of the load in the transverse direction, so my thought was that I could just use one holdown at the corner.

Please let me know if you have any additional comments, suggestions. Thank you very much for your help - I appreciate it.

As long as the edge nailing from the transverse and longitudinal walls are received by the same member which is also attached to the holdown, you are done. Mikes suggestion of a full stick or nailing against the widest face of the corner stud best ensures this mechanism works. The embedded strap on the extra wide face is best for the foundation contractor as well as the framer. That ultimately making it better for your client as well as yourself. The picture from the catalog doesn't address the continuity at the corner without adequate shear transfer between the outermost stud and the two that have been attached to the holdown.

Thanks RVSWA - I see what you're saying about the edge nailing, etc. I appreciate your input!
