Hi guys

Has anyone got any typical details for a concrete slab half joint. I know how to design corbels and nibs by strut-tie and detailing bearings but I just wanted to know if there is anything special that I need to look out for.

The slab is rather large between permanent movement joints (>50m ; >160') so I am expected large shrinkage movements and seismic displacements will also be a factor.

Any tips will be appreciated.

Thanks

generally the bearing strip has a maximum amount of rotation as well as movement it can handle.

depending on he thickness I like to detail u bars for the thinner corbels, using a N10 bar with a 4d pin. normally the bearing pad is place 25-50mm behind the star of the bend of the hook bar.

For some reason, I can't open the file or access engineering.com. Will try again later. I try to avoid these at all cost, as there is a record of lots of failures and maintenance issues. But yes, you use strut-tie and the bearing design is critical. Supervision during the construction is probably the most important thing...the best detail can easily be defeated by sloppy workmanship.

Got the file open now. What your picture shows is not a halving joint...a halving joint is when the slab or beam is just split in half, and that is the type joint I was referring to.

Your corbel joint allows for access to the bearing from below, so much better than the halving type.

Don't forget the hanging bars in the supporting side.

Cheers guys

I opened a bearing catalogue and it was referring to it as a half joint so that is were I picked up the terminology. Not to mind. Corbel it is.
