Compatibility of Silicon Oil to petroleum if mixed from barrier fluid

Hi,

I would seek an advise as I have MSDS of pumping liquid of diesel additive.

In general industry, we have the barrier fluid of silicon oil pressure transmitter to monitor the system.

I like to know how safe or compatible the silicon oil since it is used if any leakage and mixed with diesel additive.

Silicone based oils will not mix with petroleum products.
Since they don't mix they will work fine as a barrier fluid.

This query should be directed to the manufacturer of the diesel additive. The information on the diesel fuel additive MSDS cannot help you select a suitable barrier fluid.

Hi George,

Manufacturer is also has little knowledge on the additive since this fluid is just additive. And the application of the silicon oil is very wide in the instruments . The question is if there is any reaction if silicon oil mixed together. This about small amount like 30 ml

it is unlikely that a silicone fluid will react - with anything because it is a more or less inert fluid.

in this particular situation when the diesel fuel additive may come into contact with the barrier fluid some carry over might occur. that may well be a unwanted situation because it may impart the lubricity of the dieselfuel whereto the additive is added.

i suggest the manufacturer of the fluid additive should be contacted to find out how their take is on eventual mixing of a silicone fluid with the additive.

Thought as much - some of these large majors, in an attempt to maintain confidentiality re the breakdown on chemical components in this diesel additive cocktail, may have subcontracted out the production of this additive. These production subcontractors probably have little knowledge on the chemical - combustion technology for this additive. You will now need to trace the original owner of this technology and pose this query to them - silicone oil or some other barrier fluid may have some influence on cetane index improvement, surfactant enhancement properties etc attributed to this additive.
