Communicating with mitsubishi PLC via modem

I have successfully remotely connected to a mitsubishi FX PLC via a mitsubishi modem at both ends.
I now wish to use a US Robotics at the PC end but whilst it will dial out and connect to the mitsubishi modem I am unable to get the GX developer to talk to the PLC
Any suggestions would be appreciated
