Hi i am 20 years old and i am interested in starting a machine shop to make custom parts for recreational sports and i was wondering what classes i should take and is there any thing i should know before i get started i am currently a service writer in my parent auto repair shop i have always enjoyed making thing this has been my dream for the last several years my dad is planning on retiring in the next 5-10 years and i plan on making his shop into my shop but i don't know what classes i need to take so i can get started. any advice is always helpful thank you

In the past I would have recommended you go to some vocational education classes but since many of these schools have closed you will probably have to go to a university offering some sort of a manufacturing engineering or industrial engineering courses which have shop classes. Don't expect to be able to estimate a job, tool it and make it with a complex part. That takes experience you get from working in a machine shop environment for some time. I actually went to a vocational school and received and received a machine shop technology certificate many years ago. I worked in industry for many years as a machinist, an N/C programmer, a manufacturing engineer and then moved into purchasing. I lost my job and finally went and got a manufaturing engineering technology degree. Experience is probably the best teacher after some basic training.
