Can anyone direct me to the rules for operating diesel engines in hazardous locations, specifically, Class 1 Div 2 areas such as a drilling rig on location.
What modifications are required for this application?
Thanks,

You need to obtain or define the "T" rating. A major hazard from a Diesel engine in a classified location is the exhaust heat. Engines are better located in unclassified areas near the hazardous areas.

Thanks JL Seagull. The engines in question (Caterpillar C18's) will be used on a carrier rig for drawworks service. I am familiar with classifications for electrical equipment (such as ATEX), but not for diesel engines.
Is there a publication which defines what is required, such as exhaust temperature/cooling and other possible problems?

Diesel fuel is Class II or IIIA combustible liquid. Therefore the classified location requirements in NFPA 70 or API RP 500 are not applicable.
