I'm currently trying to get a handle on when I need to use the Chapter C analysis procedures, and am finding it tough. The formulas aren't intuitive, and the whole chapter is a bit confusing...to me at least. Do we need to use this chapter for all lateral load carrying members (collectors for example) or JUST those frame members carrying load in the plane of the frame? Is it required that we use the procedures laid out in this chapter, or are there others that would work too? Does anybody have further reading that might be helpful, or even some example problems that illustrate what the steel manual thinks they've written out so clearly.
