career change from tool & die to engineering

I am currently a mold tool & die maker as well as die cast builder. My interests have gradually changed over the years and now find I don't enjoy my work as much as I used to. I'm starting to wish I had gone into engineering (mechanical or aeronautical), but at my age, 38, I'm asking if anyone has made a change such as this in their life. Also, how favorable will employers look at me compared to some younger engineer out of school?

I have 2 friends, one who used to be a plumber, the other worked @ Cessena in the shop driving rivets through skins, and both became bored with their job and decided to study aerospace engineering. Each of these guys ended up working as stress engineers in my group (one was around 36 when he graduated, the other was appx 38).

In 4-5 years you can be asking the same question again if you don't do anything now... and besides, age really means nothing. It is always about what *you* want to accomplish in life - who cares what others think!
