Can you weld stainless steel and inconel together?

I need to know if these two metal present any problems when welded together. Also, where can I go to find out about what types of welds are better for different metals.

Yes they can be welded.&nbsp;&nbsp;Take a look at a book published by Lincoln Electric titled &quot;Metals and How to Weld Them&quot;.&nbsp;&nbsp;It's a pretty good basic reference.<br><br>Tom W

The short answer is yes...but like most engineering answers, the proper answer is &quot;it depends&quot;.&nbsp;&nbsp;If the Inconel you are referring to is a solid-solution strengthened alloy (e.g. 600, 625) welding to an austenitic stainless steel like 304 is quite easy.&nbsp;&nbsp;If the Inconel is a precipitation-hardenable alloy (e.g. 702, 750, etc.) however, the process becomes much more involved, requiring preheating and a postweld heat treatment to avoid strain age cracking.&nbsp;&nbsp;The ASM Handbook, Vol. 6 &quot;Welding, Brazing and Soldering&quot; comes to mind as a good starting reference.
