I am trying to use a cruciform column for a 12 story SMF structure. all of the flanges and webs of the section are built of plates and no I-beams are used. I have uploaded a picture of the section.

my problem is: How to calculate the fillet weld's dimension for welding different parts of the section together ???

I would appreciate any help.

What software do we use to view a wmf file?

Michael.
Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.

If the section is strictly axial (compression or tension) no design is neccessary, simply provide the minimum size required per AISC/AWS based on material thickness. If the section has flexure the shear flow formula VQ/nI can be used. Blodgett's book page 3.2-17 through 3.2-29 provides a good example to follow. Final weld sizing is performed on page 3.2-29.

StrPE, Tanx alot!!!

That is right! the section is under flexural stress, so i used the shear flow formula; with different Q for flange weld and web weld.

tanx again.
