is it acceptable to use type s mortar in lieu of RMG or Concrete in a 6' x 1.33' brick pilaster that is 12 ft tall? I have called for (5) #6 vertical bars in the pilaster that is surrounded by brick and has concrete core that is approx. 8" x 5.33.' There are 4 pilasters supporting the roof framing over a portico, so vertical and lateral loads are minimal.

I've only ever spec'd Type S mortar in a masonry pilaster. In fact in any masonry. Concrete as the mortar is far too stiff.

Or are you talking about using Type S mortar as the grout for the inside of the pilaster? Then no, I wouldn't do that. Type S is not stiff enough to do that. Also, to mix it thin enough that it would flow nicely into the cavity your strength would be shot to hell.

Just use regular concrete grout. cheaper and better. There's a reason for it's name.
