BEARINGS &TRACK ROLLERS

Please can anyone tell me if you can use a standard roller
bearing as a track roller as long as you stay within the working loads as specified in the catalogue.
Surely a track roller bearing of similar dimensions to a roller bearing are essentially the same thing arent they.
The outer race of a bearing is hardened isnt it just as a track roller.?
Please can anyone comment.

Track rollers (escavating equipment) are in most cases sleeve bearings, sealed with hydraulic oil, because of the high impacts inherent to travelling.

If you agree that assembling a roller type bearing using a hammer is bad practice and will shorten the life of the bearing, imagine what the track will do with the roller.

Yes you can use a standard bearing as a track roller. Pick the beefiest one that you can with the largest area. Make sure that you get a sealed one for ambient use.

The outer race of a standard bearing is much thinner that the outer race of a cam follower (track roller). When a standard bearing is used as a cam follower, the point loading on the outer race will cause it to deform and not distribute the load as equally among the balls as it would if installed in a bearing housing. The result is a much decreased load carrying capacity, but I'm not sure how to quantify it.

Cam rollers can be used if the loads are
primarily thrust acting through the table.
If more than three are used, it may be hard
to guarantee that all cam rollers share the
same loads. Also remember that the cam rollers
act like radial bearings and only a small
portion of the load balls or rollers are
carrying any load at one time. It is always
good to have a central thrust bearing and then
use the cam roller near the extreme ends to
eliminate any excess moment load caused by
deflection on the thrust bearing.
