If you're just talking about beam load analysis, WinBeam is a winner.

We use apps and then we will forget that M = wL^2/8 and M = PL/4, etc. as some has forgotten how to do moment distribution. I see many engineers reach to their computers to run a simple span beam with single load or uniformly distributed load. What shall we do when the computers crash? I am glad I kept my slide rule!

You know what I think is better, write your own application in a spreadsheet or VB.

These formulas, as well as estimating the values in them, for structural engineers are akin to memorizing multiplications in elementary school.

Do kids still memorize multiplication tables? That was 3rd Grade.

In 8th Grade we had to memorize the square of 1 to 25 (along with JFK's inaugural speech.)

I am partial to RAM SBeam for the analysis and design of a single span (with or without cantilevers). It works great for composite or non-composite steel design per AISC 360-05 or a variety of other codes.
If you are interested in wood or concrete design then I have other preferences.

I like BeamChek (spelling is correct - $150) or Archon Engineering BEAM ($40)

BeamCheck is very good fro wood or steel. Archon is only steel but covers almost all section types and sizes.
