Dear all,

I have a question about the calculation of the backing strip. TEMA indicates that the equation in order to calculate the thickness of the backing device is: type A T=SQRT(WHY/BS) A and for type B T=SQRT(2WHY/BS). My case is configuration Type B according TEMA.

The question is that in 2.9 of APPENDIX 2 ASME VIII DIV1 explain that for a split loose flanges you have to consider 200% of the moment, so i understand that i have to consider 200% of the moment.

I would like to know what i have to do.

Thanks in advance.

ROMEUM2, the formula for type B includes the multiplier "2", thereby meeting Appnedix 2. Use it as is.

Also, please refer to it as a backing ring. A backing strip goes behind a weld.

Mike

Thanks SnTMan,

But when i use type A, why it's not necessary multiplier "2".

Thanks,

ROMEUM2, I don't know of anything definitive to refer you to, but my understanding is that the dovetail configuration is considered to prevent rotation of the backing ring, this is what the "old guys" told me years ago.

Sorry for the late reply, blame it on the holidays:)

Regards,

Mike
