ASTM A311 (Stressproof) Material 1

Hi All,

I am looking for a near equivalent material for the ASTM A311. The most important, desired properties are the following:

1) Hardness: 241-293 HB
2) Yield strength: Min 690 MPa (100,000 psi)
3) Tensile strength (UTS): Min 795 MPa (115,000 psi)
4) Elongation: Min 7%
5) Reduction of area: Min 20%

I have heard the term "stress proof" applied to 1144 steel. It seems to meet your requirements.

Doesn't A311 have some restrictions on processing methods?
There are a ton of way to reach those properties, but the fatigue results may be very different depending on HT.

Not familiar with A311 and I’m away from my books. Is there one or several grades in this standard?

Bar diameter? That influences the selection.
Do you plan to weld? Case harden?

8620 is versatile and should meet the mechanical properties.

I would not usually associate the term "Stressproof" to free machining steel containing 0.24% - 0.33% sulfur. That's marketing for you!

Why not actually use Stressproof? The properties you list seem be what Niagara steel lists for Stressproof. What is different in what you are looking for?

Be careful - many steel suppliers will quote plain 1144 (not actually Stressproof).

Weldable was never a requirement by OP.

With that said, I have been using 1144 round to make T-handle wrenches for myself and friends. I join the T with silicon bronze brazing alloy. They are quite strong.

I buy it from McMaster-Carr. Theirs claims to meet ASTM A311
