I am working on a vessel with a body flange material of ASTM A-27 GR 70. Can anyone give me the yield and tensile stress values and also the allowable stress at 70 deg. F?
Thanks in advance.

What is the vessel code of construction? The cast material you mentioned is not approved for ASME Section VIII, Div. 1. The material is not even listed in ASME Section II.

The vessel code of construction is unknown. The vessel was built in 1964 for use as a test head.
The client wants to know what is the mawp if designed per ASME Div. 1.
I need the yield and tensile stress values and also the allowable stress of a similar Code material if this material is not listed.

astm lists the chemicals, tensiles and yields for two classes of grade 70.

without allowable stress tables at temperatures, I would be very hesitant to furnish a MAWP for an unknown material on a part that is 45 years old with who knows wat defects in the casting.

ASTM A 27 is a specification for steel castings used for general applications. This material is not intended for pressure retaining capability in pressure vessel design (ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code).

There are two Grades 70-36, 70-40.

The 70 refers to min UTS
The 36 or 40 refers to min YS.

Sounds like he's got nothing better than "generic steel" that "might be" either 36K or 40K strong.

Could he hydro (proof test) the pressure head using a 36,000 yield strength psi; then - if its passes the hydro - accept a MAWP based on that 36,000?
