I am aware of common practice whereby weld width is restricted to 3 times the diameter of the electrode used.
(ie vertical weave welding with a 4d electrode has a restriction on width to 12mm, anything wider has to be multi-capped!)
I am unable to find this restriction is ASME IX, the tank is also governed by API 620 code.

The change from stringer to weave bead with a limit on weave is common however, it is not addressed in most construction codes. It is instead a process detail that is stated on many weld procedure specifications by clients.

ASME Section VIII Division 1, UCS-56(f),(4),(a): Paraphrased without all the conditions and limitations:

In the event a vessel has been PWHT'd, where a welded repair is required, the contractor can limit the weave bead width so that the repair is exempt from PWHT.

This was discussed in a different forum a couple of weeks ago and was pointed out to the readers by one of the sharp eyed participants that goes by the handle "Joey".

Best regards - Al
