API PIPE TO ASME VESSEL

Can I use pipe API (5L, X60, X65, etc) as a body in a small pressure vessel designed accord. ASME rules?

Assume this a SecVIII,"U" vessel. If so you may use the API material only if it also meets the requirments of UCS-23 and
SecII PartA.
 
I don't think you can. I could not find any API 5L materials in Section IID allowable stress tables. However, if your vessel is small enough, it may be outside the scope of Section VIII. See U-1 for limits.
 
Sorry I did not make myself very clear. You are correct that pipe only marked with API specs.cannot be used in ASME construction. However it is very common to dual mark material. The best way,is to obtain the MTRs for the material and check it against the requirments in ASME SecII A. In some cases API does not require a flattening test and ASME does. There are grades of ASME accetable pipe that are also marked API 5*.

Be careful and consult with your AIA.
 
For clarification...
The API material may be used provided that the requirements of the API material meet or exceed the applicable ASME specification. Code interpretation VIII-78-38 gives some insight on this matter. Although this interpretation addresses the use of ASTM material, the general concept is still applicable.

The requirements of UG-10 allow the use of materials not specified by ASME code so long as they meet the requirements as specified in UG-10 and the applicable material spec. Just be sure to discuss with the AI and there should be no problem.

Also, see UCS-27 "Shells made from pipe". Don't forget that the wall thickness for pipe products must be reduced by 0.875 to account for undertolerance (UG-16d). This seems to forgotten often.

Be sure to check metlsmith's suggestion about the size of the vessel. Although it may be small, there are still maximum and minimum pressure limits when applying Sec VII Div 1.

May be OK for SECT 8 DIV. 1
