I'm developing a written specification for a small PLC control system to be supplied with some process equipment. Does anyone have a document that I could start with instead of starting from scratch? I'm specifying an AB SLC-5/05 and either a panelview or RSView HMI. I'm particularly interested to know what other engineers require for cabinet design.

Check with any of the plc mfg, they all have guide specification. Most I have seen use enclosures with racks. Try Allen Brady, they sell enclosures for thier plc's.

Specify lots. Does the location require NEMA 1, 12, 4X (IP equivalant), area classification, ... Do you want 12-inch space above and below the terminal rails? If you do not specify the supplier may run terminals from the floor and ceiling. Do you need Nylon turminals with knife disconnecting fused terminals and blown fuse indicators installed in a manner that the indicator lights when the fuse is blown? Do you want the relays to be removable or installed where you can read the terminal numbers on the base? What are your wiring requirements, insulation type, wire tags, etc.? Somehow you need to specify at least three-times the wire duct that you think necessary or the cover will never close. You better tell the supplier. Define your requirements in your bid documents or you will not get what you want.

I agree, even the smallest jobs require the utmost care in addressing every detail if your talking about a cabinet. You should address lots of things including standards such as UL and the NEC. The more info you provide the better results you will get.

One area I have found that is generally lacking is wire color coding/sizing. You can go to NFPA.org and download (for a small fee) the NFPA 79 section of the manual (the entire NEC is only section 110). In NFPA 79, they specify everything for the enclosure/control wiring including colors, size, what schematic drawings should look like etc.
