On another site and came across this little bit from cadwire

Initially.

I had a little smirk, followed by a sort of a self-satisfied glow.....followed by....

Damn....I'm 38 this year.

Followed by the last three hours of depression.....

Finally....

The questions I think are worth (not financially) asking the rest of the community....

AM I OLD?,
Have I passed my prime,
Is that sell-by date stamped on my gluteus maximus going to start haunting me?

(Please somebody make me feel better)

Never mind. The best engineering director I've ever heard of reckoned engineers were approaching their PRIME at 44.

DK Brown. BTW.

38??????? At 38 most engineers in big companies are still called "that kid" (usually with some unplesant adjective between the two words). Everyone checks your work till you're 40, after that it gets really scary because you suddenly become the person checking other people's work.

My graduate advisor was 84 and he was still just about the best there was at communicating inovative solutions to difficult problems.

That's just the age of the attendees ... not necessarily the typical user base.
Only the more 'senior' ranking users are probably being allowed to attend the convention so they can report back and teach the younger users. One of the perks of seniority.

I just turned 38 in March, so I know where you are coming from. I believe in what Greg posted, we still have a few years ahead of us before we reach our stride. On average, you've probably got 12yrs engineering-related experience spread across 4 companies, 20-22yrs total work experience. We've easily got another 25yrs ahead of us to learn and grow, and hopefully along the way share that ever-growing knowledge with others.

As for the average age of attendees, let's face it, the "kids" are in the office doing grunt work. The more experienced folks are out at these shows, soaking up info, keeping their finger on the industry's pulse, while the gray-hairs have had their fill of these dog and pony shows, and would rather spend their time on other endevors.

38? That isn't even half of your working career. Most people can expect to work to 65. That means you worked about 16 years and have 27 more years to go?

Wait till you hit 50 - how "OLD" will you feel then? Hee Hee

The guy's an idiot.

Typically the people that go to these conferences seem to be either CAD/PLM administration types and/or Decision Makers (read some kind of management).

Inherently this means most of them will probably be 10+ years into their career.

This isn’t the kind of show you go to for one day to be dazzled or as a perk, like say a one day trip to Farnborough Air Show was for me when I worked in the UK. Companies aren’t going to be sending minibuses/vans full of junior staff ‘for the experience’ etc. Most attendees stay for either the first 3 days or the whole week, which is a lot of time for someone it’s not of direct benefit to their employer. Plus many users aren’t located locally so you’re talking air fair, car hire, accommodation costs…

I went last year, at the time I was 28 and have to say I was probably one of the youngest there but I wasn't surprised. In fact I was surprised I got sent however our companies demographics are perhaps on the young side plus I'm considered one of the senior CAD guys with some input on the administration so I made the trip, too busy this year sadly.

I do the same work as the 20 year old co-op so being in my mid thirties I do feel a little old ;) I think of UG as a tool not a career but it is hard to differentiate the two in Automotive.

I thought I was one of the oldest ones in my office. I found out that some of the guys that looked to be in their twenties were older then me. Maybe I should lay off the McDonalds ;)

My last job was great as we had engineers with over 30 years in and one was even 75 ;) So I felt as though I was "the kid" but it was nice working with so many experienced engineers.

And as everyone says we still have 30 years to go. So I am not even mid career yet.

Washed up at 38?!?!?!? I don’t think so, certainly not as an engineer. And if you want a female perspective on male attractiveness, I think mid-30’s is just the starting point. A girlfriend and I just saw Hot Fuzz starring Simon Pegg, who is 37. And we both thought he was HOT, HOT, HOT.

You are feeling depressed because you are mourning your youth. You need to tell it good ridence and embrace the future. The only thing now is that you really need to start watching the diet and exercise.

SIMON PEGG !!! HOT!!!

Too many margaritas, Cass. Did you have this thought when you were leaning on that parking meter?

The image that sold me on Simon Pegg. Strong, yet accessible and cute.....like a labrador puppy wearing a spiked leather collar!

Don’t worry WGJ, I’m terribly fickle. Simon Pegg will soon be replaced by the next hot stud.

OMG, what are you thinking girl? What on earth do you find atractive about him?

At least I know I'm now in my prime. Worryingly, I'll soon be past that too!

OK, OK, you’ve shamed me into going back to the last hot stud. Now you can’t argue with this one. BTW, he’s a bit older, just turned 39, and even hotter. So it must be that men never pass their prime and just get more attractive as they age! ;-)

Thanks Cass,

I was just getting over my wifes response to seeing him in Casino Royale at the weekend and you go and post that here!

38 isn't old...at least my current g/f would beg to differ! I'm 10 years younger, but still bodybuild with guys in their late 30s and 40s. You've got years to go until you have to worry. Hell, we've got two guys that still race with us on weekends, and they're in their late 50s and still don't mind the occasional crash (sportbike crashes being a bit nastier than car crashes IMO). Go out and buy something cool...that seems to help us lads whenever we're down and out.

tripleZ, Be careful using the term "current" when describing a girlfriend (or wife for that matter!) in a public forum where she may see it. She may infer that you consider it as a temporary position. ;-)

prohammy, If you're feeling old, change the units: "Old? Are you kidding? I've only been around for just over 3/8 of a century."

casseopeia, I don't recall giving you rights to use my photo. ;-)

Cheers,
CanuckMiner (slightly younger at 3.5 decades)

I'm a mere 27 if I choose to count in hexadecimal. I've never seen a requirement to state which number base is being used in places where age is asked.

Ingenious, SomptingGuy! But what happens in a couple more years when you turn 2A?
